Hello devs,
beginning of September we did a relatively big relaunch of our podcast
portal. Changes included switching from the DB based navigation to the
array driver, using Horde Routes instead of a self-written url driver
amongst many other things which all helped to improve performance.
Sessions were the one thing I was still unhappy with. Neither file
based nor DB based sessions provided the performance I was looking
for. Today I made the switch to memcached sessions. The switch is
trivial but for us it is maybe the biggest performance improvement in
years. So I thought I share a little how-to I have written on this
topic with you: http://bit.ly/SGLmemcache
As a more general note as part of our relaunch we developed a
dashboard. Our frontpage is now customizable for guests and registered
users. We provide placeable blocks which can be hidden/shown and put
in an order the user likes. For guests the order is saved in a cookie.
For registered users it is saved permanently in the database. If you
are interested in this please check out www.podcast.de.
